Chapter 17

Jack darted back, behind Gooch, and worked on blending into the shadows given off by the magical lamps throughout the room. He was happy to fight a non-undead creature for a change, even if it was a huge, demon monstrosity. At least it had a large, low-hanging nut sack; Jack could finally try out his new perk. As he melded into the shadows and began making his way around the room, he cast a quick Analyze spell. The results were not surprising.

Name: Unknown. Race: Unknown. Level: Unknown. Hit Points: Unknown. Spell Points: Unknown.

He really had to level up that skill. He watched Topher disengage from the skeleton he was fighting and move to confront Thindary. He began twirling his staff, fingers moving faster than Jack’s eyes could follow. The staff began to blur as it spun, and a wispy, nearly translucent wall of wind formed in front of the goat demon, halting its progress. Topher continued to spin his staff, the wall becoming thicker, wider, and taller until it spanned nearly half of the room and almost reached the ceiling. At the same time, Geoe finished her spell, and two giant black tentacles reached up from the floor near Thindary and entwined themselves around his legs, holding him fast. Geoe and Topher are full of new tricks.

The tall, muscular demon fought against the tentacles while pushing against the wall, taut muscles straining against both forces. He let out a bleat of rage, placing his hands on one of the tentacles and whispering something that was obviously another spell. The tentacle immediately began to wither, drying up into dust as if Thanos had snapped his fingers. The particles floated down to the floor.

Dropping his flail, Thindary reached down and grabbed the other tentacle, veins popping in his arms and hands as he pulled. He ripped the magical tentacle out of the ground, whirling it around his head and letting it fly into one of the smaller skeletons, whose bones shattered on impact. Then, picking up his flail again, Thindary slammed the three heads into the wall of air, breaking it down faster than a heavily sweating Topher could repair it. Luckily, Geoe wasn’t done yet. A ten-by-ten-foot pit of lava appeared under Thindary. He was so enraged at the wall that he didn’t notice the ground turning into molten lava until it was too late. He began slowly sinking into the pit. Unfortunately, the lava didn’t have the desired effect, and Thindary threw his head back and baa’d in laughter.

“I am a—baa—creature of my master’s plane now. Fire and I have an understanding.” Jack heard Geoe give a shout of annoyance at that before going back to work on another spell.

“I can’t keep this up much longer!” Topher screamed, arms still spinning his staff vainly to keep the wind wall repaired, physical and mental fatigue clearly wearing him down.

Jack spared a moment to see how the fight against the two giant skeletons was progressing. Geoe’s large dire wolf and Lucy’s two remaining skeletons were trading blows with one of the creatures.
